KMA Demolishes Unauthorized Structures Around Baba Yara Stadium

The Operation Team of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) with assistance from the military, last Friday carried out a demolition exercise to remove unauthorized temporary structures around the Baba Yara Sports Stadium. It is part of ongoing efforts to restore order and enforce the Assembly’s planning and development regulations in the Kumasi Metropolis.

The Assembly reiterated that the exercise forms part of its broader commitment to enforcing planning regulations, protecting public spaces and promoting an orderly urban environment.

The KMA had served several notices to owners and occupants of the affected structures early this year informing them to vacate the premises and remove their belongings before the enforcement date.

Besides the notices, the Assembly had also held a series of engagements with owners of the structures and other relevant stakeholders to encourage voluntary compliance and ensure that all affected persons were adequately informed ahead of the exercise.

According to the Assembly, the affected structures failed to conform to approved planning and development specifications and had been identified as unauthorized developments within the enclave of the Baba Yara Sports Stadium.

In spite of the recalcitrant conduct of the squatters, they were given the opportunity to remove valuable items and dismantle portions of their structures before demolition commenced.

Military personnel provided security support to ensure the exercise was conducted peacefully and without disruption while KMA officials supervised the operation and City Guards maintained order.

Heavy-duty equipment was deployed to demolish the remaining unauthorized structures after occupants had removed their belongings. The Assembly urged the public to obtain the necessary approvals before putting up any temporary or permanent structures and to comply with all directives issued by the Assembly to avoid similar enforcement actions in the future.

KMA reaffirmed its commitment to sustained enforcement measures aimed at ensuring orderly development across the metropolis, stressing that unauthorized structures that contravene planning regulations will continue to be removed in accordance with the law.
