Asante Kotoko head coach Eric Tinkler says the club has removed the “rotten element” that contributed to disciplinary problems as he continues to reshape the squad ahead of the new season.
Tinkler made the comments after the Porcupine Warriors secured a 1-0 victory over Heart of Lions in a friendly at the University of Ghana Stadium warm-up pitch on Tuesday.
The victory was Kotoko’s second in Accra after they previously defeated Golden Warriors 2-0 in a game played over three 45-minute periods.
Kotoko have undergone a major squad overhaul following their eighth-place finish last season, with several first-team players leaving the club through releases and mutual contract terminations.
Among the notable departures are Prince Badu, Kwame Poku, Elvis Kyei Baffour, Francis Acquah and goalkeeper Benjamin Twum.
Tinkler believes the changes have helped improve the discipline and unity within the squad.
“I think the discipline, both on the field and off the field, obviously, was an issue when I arrived, but I think we've dealt with that really, really well. We've got rid of the rotten element that existed in the club, and today you can see everyone is united. Everybody's fighting for the same cause, and it's a positive thing to see.”
Kotoko have spent nine days in Accra as part of their preparations before returning to Kumasi for the Democracy Cup clash against Hearts of Oak on August 28.
