Sports and Recreation Minister Kofi Adams has challenged Ghanaian club owners to focus on building sustainable football institutions rather than relying mainly on developing players for sale.
Adams, speaking at the GFA’s 32nd Ordinary Congress in Prampram on Thursday, acknowledged the financial commitment of club owners but questioned the long-term assets their investments were creating.
“I respectfully challenge our club owners. Many of you invest enormous personal resources into football, and Government recognises that sacrifice. But we must ask: what exactly are we building? A team, or an institution?” Adams said.
He said clubs must build assets that can generate value beyond player transfers.
“An institution builds assets: supporters, brand equity, academies, facilities, player contracts, data, digital audiences, commercial partnerships, merchandise, history and community relationships,” he added.
Adams warned that clubs that depend mainly on selling players will continue to face financial difficulties.
“If the only asset we are building is the next player we intend to sell, our clubs will remain financially fragile,” he said.
