Upper West Region perfect after Matchday 2 as Group B reaches four-team deadlock

Upper West Region have established themselves as the early team to beat in Group A of the 2026 MTN Elite U-19 Championship, while the qualification contest in Group B has become a four-way battle after Matchday 2.

Upper West Region maintained their perfect record with a closely fought 2-1 win over Volta Region. The result was their second victory in as many matches and moved them on to six points, the maximum available at this stage of the competition.

That strong start leaves Upper West Region at the top of Group A and gives them an early advantage as the tournament moves towards its next round of fixtures.

Defending champions Eastern Region are second on three points. Ashanti Region follow in third with two points, while Volta Region and Western Region have one point apiece.

The standings mean Group A remains competitive behind the leaders. Although Upper West Region have created some separation at the top, the remaining teams are still within reach of the qualification places with more matches to come.

Group B is even more closely contested, with four teams all having collected three points after two rounds of matches.

Greater Accra currently occupy first place because of their superior goal difference, helped by their emphatic victory on the opening day. Brong Ahafo Region are second, with Central Region in third and Upper East Region fourth.

The four sides have identical points totals, leaving no room for complacency in the race to progress. Results in the next fixtures could significantly change the order of the group, where goal difference is currently separating the teams.

Northern Region are at the foot of Group B without a point from their opening two matches. They now require a strong response in their remaining fixtures if they are to revive their hopes of reaching the next stage of the championship.

The contrasting positions in the two groups have highlighted the competitive nature of this year’s MTN Elite U-19 Championship. Upper West Region have taken control of Group A through two successive wins, but the battle for qualification in Group B remains unresolved.

With four teams separated only by goal difference at the top of Group B, every result in the next round is likely to carry significant weight. In Group A, meanwhile, Eastern Region, Ashanti Region, Volta Region and Western Region will aim to close the gap on the leaders when the competition resumes.

After Matchday 2, Upper West Region are the only side with a maximum six points, while Group B remains finely balanced on three points each for the leading quartet.
