Former Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, is closing in on victory in the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer race, ahead of Saturday’s primary, according to the latest survey by Global InfoAnalytics.
With six days to the election, the research firm’s Committed Voters Model places Dr. Bawumia at 48 per cent, just two percentage points short of the 50 per cent.
His closest challenger, Mr. Kennedy Ohene Agyapong trails with 25 per cent, while Dr. Bryan Acheampong follows at 6 per cent.
Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum polled 1 per cent, with Mr. Kwabena Agyapong recording a negligible figure.
Global InfoAnalytics reports that 21 per cent of delegates declined to disclose their voting intentions, noting that Dr. Bawumia would require only a small fraction of this undecided bloc to secure victory.
Regionally, the poll shows Dr. Bawumia leading in 14 out of the 16 regions, with Central and Volta Regions being the only exception. The research firm has indicated it will release its final projection ahead of the primary.
Meanwhile, the campaign team of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has strongly criticised Kennedy Agyapong, describing him as a “peddler of lies” who lacks integrity, following comments made ahead of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) January 31 flagbearer primary.
In a statement jointly signed by Opare Ansah, National Campaign Manager and Nana Akomea, Chairman of Campaign Communications, the team said it was shocked by what it described as Mr. Agyapong’s conduct and character in the ongoing internal contest.
According to the statement, Kennedy Agyapong had, in the past week, accused Dr. Bawumia of making false claims about Professor Adu Boahen’s role and performance in the NPP’s 1996 flagbearer race.
Based on these allegations, Mr. Agyapong reportedly described Dr. Bawumia as a liar and an untrustworthy person, and urged party delegates not to vote for him.
However, the Bawumia campaign team insists that Dr. Bawumia never made the statements attributed to him, describing the accusations as entirely false.
The statement further said that despite being informed of the inaccuracies, Mr. Kennedy Agyapong has refused to retract the claims or apologise, a posture the campaign team described as “deeply troubling and lacking integrity.
“It is rather Kennedy Agyapong who is the liar in this matter,” the campaign team said, adding that his refusal to acknowledge the falsehoods shows “a complete absence of honesty and responsibility.”
The team urged NPP delegates to take Mr. Agyapong’s conduct into account, as they prepare to cast their votes and called on party members to reject what it described as politics based on misinformation and personal attacks.
