The Ada Divisional Police Command is investigating circumstances leading to injuries sustained by five former employees of Electrochem Ltd. on Monday, at Sege, in the Ada West District of the Greater Accra Region.
As at the time of going to press, it was not clear if the injuries were as a result of rubber bullet fired by the police and the officer responsible.
They injured persons are Michael Ahuahey, Matthew Agbovie, Chaitey Ismael, Elias Aklie and Philip Tettehfio.
Information available to The Chronicle from Sege reveals that almost a year ago (August 15, 2025), owners of Electrochem Ltd. allegedly dismissed 150 (One hundred and fifty) employees without settlement of their entitlements.
After going through all protocols without success, the aggrieved workers declared their intention to demonstrate, so as to attract attention of the rightful authorities.
In the morning of Monday, August 3, 2026 the former workers congregated inside the company’s premises, amidst singing and dancing to jama (morale songs), awaiting the needed attention.
The information from a source close to the unionised leadership of the workers alleged that, when a contingent of policemen drawn from Ada and Tema arrived at the scene, they noticed that the demonstrators had used electrodes to tack the main gate and, thereby, prevented its free movement.
The source went on that the Tema Regional Operations Commander, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Mr Jean Kpelli addressed the workers and impressed upon them not to resort to any violence.
Police then managed to disengage the welded mental gate, guarded the workers out of the company’s premises.
The source continued that, the disappointed workers again went to assemble at a nearby village, Nakom-Korpe.
A number of vehicles, including that of Police, drove past the direction only for them to hear shots fired from one of the cars, hitting the workers and injuring the five.
There has not been any official release from the Police, however, a highly placed source at Tema Regional Headquarters intimates that, investigation has commenced to establish what transpired.
