A major suspected narcotics trafficking operation was foiled on Wednesday night after police intercepted 866 parcels of substances suspected to be cocaine concealed in sacks of gari and konkonte and allegedly being prepared for export from the Tema Port enclave. The consignment has a street value of US$6.928 million.

The operation, carried out by a crack team from the Tema Regional Police Command, led to the arrest of three suspects, including a Dutch national, who are assisting investigators to unravel what police believe is a wider international drug trafficking network.
A highly placed police source that earlier spoke to The Chronicle before formal announcement was made named the suspects as Gilano Horwin, 31, a Dutch national; John Mensah Sabah, 41; and Alhaji Iddris Haruna, 52.
According to the source, at about 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, the police acted on intelligence that a consignment of goods was being loaded into a container at a warehouse within the Tema Port enclave for shipment.

The intelligence prompted the immediate deployment of an operations team to the location, where officers reportedly found the three suspects supervising the loading of the container.
A search of the cargo allegedly uncovered 866 parcels of substances suspected to be cocaine, concealed among sacks of gari and konkonte in what investigators suspect was an attempt to evade detection.
Police sources said one of the suspects, Gilano Horwin, allegedly admitted that the concealed substances were cocaine and reportedly claimed ownership of the consignment. The suspected narcotic has since been taken into police custody for forensic examination, while the suspects remain in custody to assist with investigations.

Investigators are also working to identify and arrest other members of the suspected trafficking syndicate believed to be behind the attempted shipment.
The seizure is one of the latest significant anti-narcotics operations at the Tema Port, underscoring continued efforts by Ghana’s security agencies to disrupt transnational drug trafficking networks using the country’s ports as transit points. Meanwhile the DAF truck carrying the suspected narcotic drugs with registration number WR1118-10 has been impounded by the police.
Meanwhile Inusa Musah reports that earlier at about 5:00 p.m. of the same day, the Prampram District Police intercepted an Opel taxicab allegedly transporting substances suspected to be Indian hemp (ganja). The Tema Command said the Tsopoli Police received information that a taxi loaded with suspected Indian hemp was being pursued.

Personnel from Tsopoli proceeded forthwith to the area and encountered another officer from Akuse Police, who had initiated the pursuit with the assistance of some commercial motor riders from Osu Wem.
The vehicles being pursued were a Hyundai H100 van and an Opel taxi with registration number ER 564X, both of which were allegedly loaded with several sacks containing the suspected Indian hemp.
The Command said the Hyundai H100 van managed to escape, while the Opel taxi cab diverted onto the Agotor–Kpatsredor road towards Tsopoli.
“Commercial motor riders at Tsopoli joined the pursuit, which resulted in the interception of the Opel taxi and the arrest of its driver, identified as Eric Tetteh.

“A search of the vehicle revealed four sacks containing dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp. The suspect, the vehicle and the four recovered sacks were subsequently conveyed to the Tsopoli Police Station for investigation,” the Tema Command explained.
The Command said suspect Eric Tetteh allegedly admitted to transporting the suspected Indian hemp from a village near Akuse.
“The police are currently making efforts to identify and arrest the persons who allegedly took away the fifth sack while efforts are also underway to trace the escaped Hyundai H100 van and apprehend the persons connected to it,” the Command said.
