This is the kind of game Kwesi Appiah and his technical team will ask all Ghanaians not to take their eyes and ears with them to the farm but maintain a good focus on the happenings in Nairobi for the 2019 qualifier against Kenya.
It is more than a game. It is the kind that means more than just the results.
The effect after the game must be one that will convince the most dispassionate fan on the streets of Ghana, about why the game still means a lot to us as a country.
Anas Aremeyaw Anas and his exposé on corruption in football has cost the game in Ghana more than the figure head of our football. It has also cost us the passion and support of the ordinary fan.
Now very few will keep tabs on the games the Black Stars play in.
Once the flagship team in the country that united everybody from all parts of the nation, the Stars now attract insults and disaffection.
So the chance to bring back the old glory days will be one that Appiah and his assistants will take without question, and there’s no better chance to do so than a competitive AFCON qualifier against Kenya.
Very few African oppositions can withstand the firepower of the Ghana team when all factors throw in the required support.
The game in Nairobi will be more than just the result. Perhaps, a massive win against the Harambee Stars will serve the best platform for the Stars to launch a comeback to a new era.
The post-Kwesi Nyantakyi era that promises glory and corruption-free football in Ghana will need the Black Stars functioning at optimum speed.
The qualifiers for the 2019 AFCON must be seamless and yield emphatic results all through.
That way, the love for the football and the Black Stars will be afloat the skies of Ghana and Appiah knows that.
So he calls for each member of Ghana’s football fraternity to present their eyes and ears to the field not the farm.
“I will say Ghanaians should pray and support us, put all their support behind us,” said Appiah who camped with his players in Ethiopia for four days ahead of the Kenya qualifier.
“We are going out there to give all our best so that our country will be proud of us. It’s not going to be easy because Kenya has got all the support and everything behind them but we are going there to make Ghana proud.”
Ghana recorded a thumping victory in a 5-0 win over Ethiopia last year and sit top of the group that includes Kenya and Sierra Leone.
