About 200 persons have been prosecuted for various sanitation related offences as government wages war against indiscriminate disposal of refuse, which is a major cause of floods in the capital.
The prosecution were done between January and April 2019 at the two main sanitation courts at Abeka and La.
Chief Executive of Accra Metropolitan Assembly, Mohammed Adjei Sowah revealed this on TV3’s news analysis programme, The Key Points on Saturday.
He noted that government is worried about how people carelessly throw refuse into drains which blocks waterways and cause deadly floods in downpours lasting barely three hours.
At least 15 people lost their lives in the national capital, Accra, with some reported cases of life-threatening injuries as well as the destruction of properties in two separate heavy rains within a week in April.
Though the deaths are regrettable, the Accra Mayor believes some of these unfortunate incidents could have been avoided easily with a little care.
Mohammed Adjei Sowah virtually begged people in the telephone interview to put their braveness aside and stop taking dangerous adventures in the rains.
“When it is raining, instead of people staying away, they like to brave the situation, and they try to drive through or walk through the rain,” he observed.
“I think that it is important to educate our people that when it is raining don’t go round or go close to the water or drive through the water… When you see water ahead of you please stop.”
Meanwhile, he said, some storm drains are being desilted as well as the dredging of some rivers to control the flooding situation in Accra as short term measures.
The flood situation in Accra and other parts of the country is perennial, happening for decades now, but successive governments are yet to find permanent solution to it.
