Tammy Abraham missed the last penalty at Istanbul’s Vodafone Arena on Wednesday night to hand Liverpool their fourth Uefa Super Cup trophy.
The match played between last season’s Champions League winners and Europa League winners saw Liverpool and Chelsea play to a pulsating 2-2 draw after extra time.
Olivier Giroud had opened the scores for the Blues in the first half but the Reds came from the break to clinch the equaliser through Sadio Mane, forcing the game into extra time.
After just five minutes of the extra time, Mane scored again in his 19th goal in 2019.
But a penalty converted by Jorginho pushed the game to penalties.
The Reds converted all five kicks with the Blues missing their last.
Chelsea had, however, had two goals ruled offside during the game.
The win gives Jurgen Klopp his first trophy of the season while Frank Lampard reels from his second loss in three days.
He lost 0-4 to Manchester United on the opening day of the 2019/20 English Premier League season.
