The New Patriotic Party is set to endorse and declare the municipal chief executive for Asokore Mampong, Alhaji Alidu Seidu, as the 2020 parliamentary candidate for the party in the Asawase constituency of the Ashanti Region.
The move will be a clear defiance of a court order secured by a presidential staffer, Manaf Ibrahim, to restrain the party from going ahead with today’s popular acclamation of the sole candidate.
Manaf Ibrahim on Thursday secured the interim injunction to stop the Electoral Commission, “their agents, servants, assigns, privies and any person acting or claiming through them…from conducting the parliamentary primaries at Asawase.”
The order also restrained Alhaji Seidu from allowing himself to be declared or hold out as the sole candidate for Asawase constituency for a period of 10 days” the injunction said.
Despite the court order, our Ashanti regional correspondent Williams Evans Nkum reports that the NPP has prepared St Anthony Catholic Church in readiness for today’s exercise, which is being conducted in about 100 constituencies where the sitting MPs are from opposition parties.
“Some of the delegates are in, the EC hasn’t arrived yet,” our correspondent reports, but said the candidate is also yet to arrive.
