Ghana failed to successfully defend the WAFU Cup won on home soil in 2017 after Senegal’s Teranga Lions beat the Black Stars B on penalties to win the trophy on Sunday.
Coincidentally, Senegal also do a host-and-win with the victory over Ghana.
After a goalless stalemate in full regulation time, two goals were produced in the extra time.
Senegal’s Youssouph Badji scored a minute into the final half of extra time but just three minutes later, Joseph Esso equalised for Ghana.
But the Stars were unlucky during the penalty shootouts as they missed two kicks, one of which by Justice Blay has got many wondering what he wanted to do – perhaps wanting to pull a Jorginho kick.
Ghana’s Shafiu Mumuni, however, walked away with the Golden Boot.
The tournament goes to Nigeria in 2021.
