Media General on Tuesday joined some market women at the Mallam Atta market in Accra to mark the 2019 Global Handwashing Day.
With support from WaterAid Ghana, GAMA Water and Sanitation Projects, Global Communities, Dream Cosmetics and other partners, the media conglomerate used the opportunity to educate market women on the need to keep the hands clean at all times as they go about business at the market.
Sanitation experts and officials took the market women through proper hand washing techniques.
The initiative formed part of Media General’s ‘Sanitation Campaign’.
Corporate Communication Manager at Media General, Henry Nii Dottey, expressed the company’s commitment to helping solve Ghana’s sanitation challenges through its sanitation campaign.
Technical Advisor of the Coalition of NGOs on Water and Sanitation, Patrick Apoya, underscored the need for a continuous education of market women and the general public on proper hand washing techniques as well as good sanitation practice.
“When it comes to hand washing, there are a lot of gaps…and this is a very good opportunity to get their attention, but if we go back and nobody comes back again, I can assure you that three, four months, they will go back to the same habit. It needs sustained effort; government and NGOs need to recognise that it is just not what you do as a social responsibility,” he said.
This year’s Global Handwashing Day is marked on the theme“Clean Hands for All”.
