Pupils of Tsledom Basic School and residents in the lower Manya Krobo Municipality of the Eastern Region have received 17,000-cedi water facility and a polytank from a philanthropist and the Japanese International Corporation Agency (JICA).
The polytank, to be used by the school to harvest rainwater for hand washing, was donated by JICA.
The pupils and resident of Tsledom, who hitherto resorted to untreated water for drinking and domestic chores, have now been provided with a borehole by a philanthropist, Madam Mercy Tettey.
The borehole will be serviced and maintained for free for the next five years.
She said she was touched by the plight of the pupils and the community in the media, saying “the sight of the sores on the people coupled with the unhygienic source of drinking water touched my heart and I realized they really needed help”.
Madam Tettey promised to support the school with a befitting accommodation for teachers.
The only library in the school has been into a residential facility for the teachers to avoid snakebite and other reptiles at their mud houses.
A JICA volunteer Yukie Immiya, who presented the polytank to the school, said the agency was touched by the plight of the school, hence the decision to provide the tank to them.
Head teacher of the school, David Kofi Teye, expressed gratitude to JICA and Mercy Tettey for the intervention.
Assembly Man for Ayemersu Electoral Area, Emmanuel Kwao, also thanked the donors for their generosity, noting the their intervention will help them to prevent the outbreaks of diseases in the community.
Dadematse of Tsledom, Dadematse Atter said the dependent on untreated water by the community was worrying.
He described the provision of the borehole as a timely intervention and appealed for more sources of potable water and road for the Tseldom commnunity.
