Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta has assured that government is committed to ensuring the history of overspending during election years in the country does not occur under the NPP administration.
According to the finance minister who was presenting the 2020 budget statement on the floor of Parliament, although the needed resources will be made available to the Electoral Commission, it will be done without harming the public purse.
“2020 is an election year, I will like to take this opportunity to inform this august house on behalf of the president that all the needed resources required shall be marshalled for the Electoral Commission to ensure that we have credible, free and fair elections,” he said on Wednesday.
Successive governments’ have over the years overspent their budget during election year, taking a toll on the country’s funds.
Many called for measures to ensure this excessive use of funds does not repeat itself.
Mr. Ofori-Atta has however reiterated government’s resolve to ensure these concerns raised by Ghanaians are addressed.
“Ghana remains one of the most stable and peaceful countries in the world, and we intend to maintain it.
“In spite of the year being an election year, Mr. Speaker, let me repeat that president Akufo-Addo and his government will ensure that the perennial excessive spending during such periods will not happen in 2020.
“We shall work within the 2020 appropriated resource envelope and adhere to the Fiscal Responsibility Act to maintain fiscal discipline. We will do so not because we are complacent of our chances, we will do so because the nation needs it,” Mr. Ofori-Atta stressed.
He also assured investors and business owners that government will ensure the 2020 elections are held within a stable environment which provides an avenue for businesses to thrive.
