Former Chief of Staff and Minister of Interior Prosper Douglas Bani is leading the Commonwealth Observer Group for Saturday’s presidential polls in Sri Lanka.
Mr Bani is head of a group whose members are drawn from various Commonwealth countries with backgrounds ranging from political, electoral, civil society and human rights to law.
The Group was invited last weekend by the Sri Lankan Electoral Commission for briefings.
They have also received similar briefings from other stakeholders including political party representatives, police and civil society groups.
Mr Bani assured the country that as observers, they will remain objective and impartial in the discharge of their duties.
“We hope that our group’s presence will support the strengthening of democracy in Sri Lanka”.
On Thursday, members of the Group are expected to be deployed to the various provinces in Sri Lanka to observe preparations ahead of polling day.
They will observe the opening of polls, voting, counting and the management of results.
The Group will issue an interim statement shortly after the polls on Saturday.
“The responsibility to act with integrity rests with all stakeholders, from the Election Commission, political parties, media, security agencies, civil society and voters,” Mr Bani said in a statement.
The Commonwealth Observer Group will leave Sri Lanka, all things being equal, on Friday, November 22.
