The Urban Blend Show on 3FM 92.7 in partnership with Wesoamo Child Cancer foundation and Readbook Lib. Ghana has supported the paediatric oncology unit of the Okomfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi with a learning and play area.
The initiative which is at its second phase was conceived by the Wesoamo Child Cancer foundation and it is aimed at creating an enabling learning and play area for the children on admission at the oncology unit.
The library and play area will also offer the children on admission the opportunity to catch up with studies while they take long breaks from school to undergo treatment. It will also serve as a care strategy to promote recovery.
The International Society of Paediatric oncology estimates that over 100,000 children in Sub-Saharan Africa develop cancer every year. In Ghana, some 300 new cases of child cancer are reported annually, which is lower than what the paediatric oncology unit of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital anticipates.
The Foundation had earlier established a similar play and learning area at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra with the help of well-meaning individuals and corporate organisations.
On her part, Miriam Osei–Agyemang, award winning host of 3FM’s Urban Blend, Biz Brief on TV3 and co-founder of Readbook L.i.b said she was moved by the story of Mr and Mrs Pwamang, parents of the late Nicole Wesoamo Pwamang who died on 10th March 2018, at age 15 after losing her battle to Osteosarcoma, cancer of the leg.
She adds that though the medical team at the various paediatric oncology units are doing what they can with the limited resources available, more needs to be done to resource the unit.
She further called on government, corporate organisations, churches and philanthropists to assist oncology units in the country to enable them offer the best of care to the children on admission.
3fm 92.7 through its mid-morning show the Urban Blend solicited for stationery and play items from listeners over a period of time, the listeners responded favourably by donating items which will aid the set up a library and play area at the paediatric oncology unit of the Okomfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi.
She expressed her profound gratitude to the loyal listeners of the Urban Blend for their immense support to this worthy cause.
