The Industrial and Commercial Workers Union (ICU) has pleaded with labour unions to respect due process before embarking on any industrial action.
General Secretary, Solomon Kotei who gave the caution was reacting to the spate of strikes across the country in recent times.
It took a high court order, for instance, to get three teacher unions – Ghana National Association of Graduate Teachers, Ghana National Association of Teachers and the Coalition of Concerned Teachers – to call off their strike over salary arrears and return to the classroom on Thursday. Meanwhile senior staff of Ghana Grid Company have suspended their strike but will continue with their protest and withdrawal of emergency cases.
Solomon Kotei expressed concern about the strike by the teacher unions and GRIDCo which he said could mar the industrial climate.
Though he agreed strikes are means to resolve grievances, he pleaded with labour unions to respect due process.
Currently, some labour unions have lost confidence in the National Labour Commission.
The unions cited the delays and in-ability of the commission to deal with matters swiftly.
In addressing labour issues, Solomon Kotei asked government to also respect memorandum of understanding.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Education has lauded teachers for calling off their strike, but it is worried that the teachers did not have trust in government to pay them the arrears.
Speaking on the development, Public Relations Officer of the Ministry of Education Vincent Assafuah assured that any money owed the teachers would be paid soon.
For labour expert, Ben Arthur, although the teachers had a legitimate concern, their approach to addressing their concerns was wrong.
Sources indicate that government will by close of next week pay the arrears due the teachers.
