Director General of the National Sports Authority (NSA) Professor Peter Twumasi has revealed that contact sport football could not resume as football fans anticipated because of how expensive it is.
Football in Ghana will remain suspended until at least 31st July, 2020, as government announced further lifting of restrictions enforced to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.
Speaking on Onua TV’s sports show Agoro Fie on Monday, June 1, the Director General said the protocols and the cost laid before the government’s COVID-19 task force were expensive.
“When we met the Ghana COVID-19 task force team, the protocols and its costs were laid before the committee if indeed we want to play.
“We can play but the cost of testing players, supplying of materials for safety is expensive of which per match, we can spend GHS 65,000.”
Hope that football was due to return at least behind closed doors have now been shut despite rigorous consultations between the Ghana Football Association (GFA) and Ghana’s Covid-19 task force.
“Every player needs to be tested of which one test cost about $80,” Prof Twumasi said.
“Players have to be tested before games, even in camp and isolate whoever tests positive and taken care of.
“So I believe the contact sports are expensive in this COVID era.”
Non-contact sports such as golf, tennis, athletics, badminton, table tennis, triathlon and cricket can however return.
