The Governance Research Bureau has prescribed winning formulae for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the December 2020 elections based on analysis of EC certified results of the two parties since 1992.
The Bureau stated that the NDC’s victory would depend on the party maintaining their average votes in NPP strongholds and swing regions as well as increasing their average votes in their own strongholds.
For the NPP, the Bureau recommended that the party should maintain their average votes in their strongholds and NDC strongholds while increasing their average votes in the swing regions.
The prescriptions were made by Dr. Kwame Asah Asante and Dr. Ezekiel Nii Nortey, resource persons from the Governance Research Bureau, while discussing the 2020 elections from the perspectives of Political Science and Statistics on TV3 Election Watch programme last Sunday.
Speaking to the data, they said both the NDC and NPP needed to perform better in their opponent’s strongholds as well as the swing regions to win the elections, stressing that prescriptions are based solely on the analysis of the data and that other variables, such as the economy, infrastructure, health, and education, among others, could alter the results either way.
They said for the parties to win they should maintain their national average votes and target and grab the votes of the smaller parties.
Dr. Asah Asante, who is also senior lecturer in the department of Political Science, University of Ghana, Legon, said the performance of the NDC and NPP in the swing regions would determine the winner.
For his part, Dr. Nortey, also senior lecturer in the department of Statistics and Actuarial Science, University of Ghana, Legon, said parties should amass much more votes from their opponent’s strongholds and the swing regions to secure victory.
Election Watch airs on Sundays at 4pm on TV3; brought you by your Election Command centre in collaboration with the Governance Research Bureau.
