The Coalition of Election Observers (CODEO) has rated the compilation of the new voters roll by the Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana 80 per cent.
The registration exercise started on June 30 and officially ended on August 6, in 33,367 polling stations. The EC further carried out a mop-up exercise which ended on Sunday August 9.
Speaking in relation to the exercise, the Coordinator of CODEO, Albert Arhin, said the exercise was largely peaceful although there were few cases of violence.
He said : “I will give them [the EC] about 80% success. I have watched registration exercises all over the country. This was more peaceful even than the limited registration that we normally do.
“There were few instances of violence that we condemned, but generally, this was an exercise that was quite peaceful as compared to other registration exercises that we have witnessed in the country.”
Mr Arhin added, “It was a smooth exercise. For example, before the EC got into this exercise, they were talking about the (Biometric Voter Registration (BVR) machines. They were going in for a new one so they’ll be able to deliver and they’ve been able to do that, apart from a few hitches”
“Even when the machines broke down, they took their time to repair them so registration could continue.
“On the whole, it was a smooth exercise because the people who were trained to do the job did extremely well. Initially, we had a problem with the COVID protocols, but as time went on, these were corrected,” he told Accra-based Citi FM Tuesday August 11.
