EC gratified with NPP, NDC recent consensus at IPAC meeting
The Electoral Commission, Ghana (EC) has expressed satisfaction with the consensus achieved between the two major political parties at the last two meetings of the Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC).
Chair of the Commission Jean Adukwei Mensa notes that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) agreed on major issues, the last being the backing of the Commission’s proposal for December 7 to be declared a public holiday. This proposal has been accepted by the president and declared as such.
Speaking at the 3rd High Level Meeting of the Presidential Elections Peace Pact 2020 on Friday, December 4 at the Mövenpick Ambassador Hotel, Mrs Mensa admitted that consensus on issues at IPAC has been difficult to achieve on several occasions.
“I must say that total consensus on issues has not always been achieved,” she admitted.
“Nonetheless, we have managed to achieve the agreement of the majority on all the Commission’s position with the understanding that the peace and stability of our dear nation is our utmost priority.”
To this end, she acknowledged that the recent turn of event with just a few days to the polls is positive news.
“It is gratifying to know, however, that in our last two meetings, the two major political parties agreed on key issues regarding this election, the most recent being the unanimous consensus to the Electoral Commission’s position that the election day be designated as a holiday.
“This is a positive news that we hope signals more consensus building beyond the elections.”
