President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is receiving flak from feminist activists for appointing only eight (8) female ministers to serve in his second government.
Mr Akufo-Addo has said he will appoint a total of thirty (30) Ministers, and sixteen (16) Regional Ministers, bringing the total number of Ministers to forty-six (46) to serve in his second government.
Eight (8) of this number are women – six (6) Ministers and two (2) Regional Ministers, a statement issued by Eugene Arhin, Director of Communications at the Presidency, said.
The President has accordingly, submitted the list of the nominees to Parliament for consideration and approval.
FemInStyle Africa ‘s Scarlett Ewurama, said in a Facebook post that FemInStyle Africa is beyond disappointed that the President has nominated only eight women for ministerial positions.
She said “This constitutes about 17 percent of his proposed government, well below the international standard set to be 30% by 2030.
“For a President who holds the AU Gender Champion award, this is very disgraceful. In the week where the world is celebrating an historical moment in the history of women’s representation, this move by the Ghanaian government sets women’s representation back by a few decades.
“Given that women make up more than half of the voting population, it is only fair that you recognize their unique contributions to the development agenda by giving them adequate representation.
“Mr. President, this is how you amplify women in your party! These women have worked hard and deserve a seat at the table. Make it happen!”
Another Feminist activist, Felicity Naana Nelson said on her whatsapp status that Mr Akufo-Addo is not a gender champion.
“You can support the NPP and still choose that Nana Addo has had an appalling record when it comes to women and Gender equality. He is not gender sensitive and he is certainly not a gender champion,” she said.
Efe Plange of PepperDem, asked what Ghanaians were expecting of Mr Akufo-Addo party of the President denigrated and belittled the female Vice Presidential Candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Professor Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang ahead of the elections last year.
“This is the party that sent a known feminist to denigrate and belittle the nomination of Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang’s VP candidacy and sent their female appointees to hold a presser to shade gender activists. Really, what were you expecting?” She asked in a Facebook post in reaction to the president’s list of ministers-designate he sent to Parliament on Thursday January 21.
