So far, the argument has always been based on the fact that our emotions, morals, culture and religions frown upon LGBTQI. Yet, we have not moved to have a clear and an unambiguous law that states our position to discourage the practice? We haven’t failed to quote a small portion of our criminal and other offences Act and we leave it at that until the next set of activists and advocates come forward.
At present, do we have laws to say one cannot identify him/herself as a member of the LGBTQI community? So that if someone wears a T-shirt with a bold inscription that reads “I AM A KOJO BESIA”, what can the state do to him?
If an individual reports another to the police, that they are gay or lesbians which law can the police use to arrest and prosecute them if they haven’t been caught having unnatural carnal knowledge?
And how can the authorities even secure evidence of unnatural carnal knowledge if they missed the match and both parties decide not to say?
By the way, what does unnatural carnal knowledge refer to: sexual acts, sexual orientation in general or vaginally supremacy? So that if a man a woman have sex and choose to have oral sex and anal sex, they would have broken our laws?
Now, a center has been set up here, with the backing of some members of the diplomatic corps. Did they register as an association, fun club or NGO? Is this a sign of “it is bound to happen” taking shape slowly but surely? Because what builds momentum for acceptance is the activities of private persons and groups and the public interest!
And oh, does any part of all this conversation whether for or against LGBTQI support or disregard Chapter 5 of our 1992 constitution, which guarantees FUNDAMENTAL HUMAN RIGHTS AND FREEDOMS?
Beyond asking Gender nominees to share their opinions on LGBTQI, shouldn’t Parliament be working speedily to enact laws to outlaw what we always scream that we do not like?
And if it matters so much not to allow LGBTQI here, why has nobody gone to test the laws at the court?
While we continue to sit pretty, let us remember that it started with LG and then BT were added to make it LGBT. QI has been added and recently I hear the letter A as well. So just like our covid case count, we started with 2 cases on March 12, 2020. Now, we struggle to count. In the same vein, the alphabet has 26 letters and so far 7 letters have gone inside the wagon. 19 more to go. When your silence drowns all the letters, we go see which ones Hawa Koomson will use to permit your fish farm inna your reservoir. Whew!
