Mohammed Salisu’s rise to the big leagues in European football has been sharp. In the pace of it comes more responsibilities that includes honouring international callups, but for Salisu, he wants to take one thing at a time.
The defender has asked for more time away from the Black Stars before he ultimately joins a bit later. In 2019, he rejected a callup after claiming he was dealing with injuries.
A year ago, head coach of the Black Stars, C.K Akonnor confirmed the football Association’s pursuit of the promising Ghanaian defender but all efforts had proved futile because he had rejected the opportunity.
In an interview with Kenyan outlet, MozzartSport, Salisu intimated that he would now want to represent Ghana.
“I’ll be so proud to play to my country, to play with Ghana, the national team,” the defender said.
He however indicated that he was in no ruch to join in as he believes keeping his role in the heart of Southampton’s defence was more pressing to him.
“But I think this is not the right moment to play in the national team. I think I need to focus on the club side because I am young, I think I need to focus on the club first and then after, when everything is fine, I can go and play for Ghana.”The defender’s €10.9m transfer from Real Vallodolid in Spain to Southampton was met with a lot of buzz from football fans in Ghana last summer.
