Once upon the chivalry days, people would pick up their date and bring them back home after a night out. Fast forward to the now times with Uber, Bolt and Taxis; the scene is significantly different.
A joint Match and Uber “Singles in America” survey revealed that two-thirds (67%) of singles think it’s “proper” for their date to order them an Uber home. And about one-third (32%) thought it’s was okay to be treated to an Uber on a first date. Just over one in four singles agreed it’s fair for you both to split an Uber home after the first date.
According to ‘My Favourite Murder podcast, it is not a good idea to have your date order you an Uber on a first date! Making someone order you an Uber gives them access to your home address which they could use to stalk. Or worse could get you killed.
Etiquette expert Diane Gottsman had this to say; “The protocol to an invitation in general is: If you extend the invitation [also irrespective of gender], you pay for the meal and tip. This does not include transportation unless it’s a particularly unusual circumstance such as distance, weather or difficulty parking etc.’’
She also added the offer to pay for a taxi is a courteous move if your date went far out of their way to met you. But it is not an obligation.
Diane also mentioned that one must never go on a date without cash or a credit card. Although protocol may demand that the inviter pays the bills, you should never assume that they would pay.
