Activists of the #FixTheCountry social media campaign have served a fresh notice to the Ghana Police Service to stage a demonstration on Wednesday, August 4.
The campaigners are hopeful this demonstration will come off and, according to them, it will be the first in a series of several planned regional and national demonstrations to be organised on the back of “consistent broken promises by successive governments”.
This comes in the wake of a protracted legal tussle between the campaigners and the Ghana Police Service after the latter secured a restraining order from an Accra High Court to stop the May 9 demonstration by the activists.
On Friday, June 25, the Court quashed the injunction but ordered the demonstrators to follow the laid-down procedure in staging a street protest.
Some government officials including the Vice President, Alhaji Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, attempted addressing concerns of the campaigners.
A statement issued by the organisers of the #FixTheCountry demonstration on Monday, July 5 said: “We will be putting out the routes of the demonstration shortly.
“The Organisers have developed a procedure for making the demonstration Covid-safe.
“In the coming days, we will be providing daily and weekly information on what protestors should know/do on the day.
“This is going to be safe and peaceful demonstration.”
It said volunteers have been recruited to analyse tweets, videos and other social media posts and discussions which have engendered the #FixTheCountry conversation.
So far, a consensus is said to be emerging, according to the organisers.
Issues like a new constitution, new economic charter, new national development plan and a framework for national healing and reconciliation have been pencilled down.
“As a social movement, we believe that further conversations are needed to expand the scope of these demands and to fine-tune them.
“We are confident that the process must happen through a national, regional and local level dialogue on #FixTheCountry.”
