The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has directed the Minister for Environment, Science and Innovation, Dr Kwaku Afriyie, to appear before the House to answer questions about measures taken by the state to protect lives along the dangerous Weija ridge.
The directive follows the failure of the Minister to show up twice to address the House after ranking member of the Works and Housing Committee, Emmanuel Bedzrah filed an urgent question on the back of a TV3 feature highlighting the dangers associated with people living along the ridge.
The feature, ‘Weija’s ticking time bomb’ revealed the dangers associated with people living on the cliff which is gradually washing away.
It also brought to light concerns of an impending disaster by the Geological Survey Authority and the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), as human activities continue on the ridge.
Ranking member on the Works and Housing Committee, Emmanuel Bedzrah was surprised state agencies responsible for checking planning and siting of structures have looked on for the people to endanger their lives and promised to file an urgent question on the matter.
After the minister failed for the second time to show up on the floor to answer the question on Tuesday, July 22, 2021, the Speaker directed that he appears before the House to answer to the issues raised by the Ho West MP.
“This is the second time this question has been advertised and the minister has not been around to answer the question,” Mr Bedzrah told the speaker.
He said. “this is a public interest question people are interested in learning about. It is an oral question with supplementary questions that we need to find out. People at Gbawe and Weija are sitting on a time bomb; anything at all can happen in that enclave.”
The Speaker told the House “the minister must appear at the next programmed date to answer the questions.”
