When Akoma FM’s current affairs and political show GhanAkoma stormed the New Kejetia Market with an outdoor programme on Friday, February 25, the traders yearned for more of such interactions.
Most of the traders who spoke after the outdoor programme explained that with more of such open-radio discussions, it will afford them a platform to throw light on their several challenges.
GhanAkoma, the most authoritative current affairs and political show in Kumasi and beyond, brought together stakeholders of the €24-million project to discuss, interact and address issues and challenges traders are faced with.
Dubbed GhanAkoma Community Watch, Friday’s interaction brought together major stakeholders including the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembky (KMA).
Paneling the outdoor programme were leader of Federation of Kumasi Traders, Nana Akwasi Prempeh, Managing Director of Kejetia New Market Kofi Duffour, Kumasi Mayor Sam Pyne, a rep from project contractors Contacta, Emmanuel Danso, reps from ECG and that of various traders groups.
At the main entrance of the market’s ground floor, the outside broadcast morning show charged the atmosphere as hundreds of traders queued to have a turn to hold the microphone and ask their questions for the duty bearers (panel) to address them.
One of the main issues which took center stage among all the traders’ challenges was the outrageous electricity bill and calls for individual shop to acquire separate electricity meters.
After the trades took their turn and asked pertinent questions and information, the panel took their time and addressed them with the complex ones which needed time booked for subsequent follow-ups.
There are thousands of challenges facing traders within and around the Kejetia Market, a situation that poses serious economic and security threat to Kumasi.
The ‘invasion’ of GhanAkoma at the New Kejetia Market, according to the traders, was a timely intervention as some of them met the Market manager for the first time.
“This is my first time of seeing and meeting the Market manager,” a utensils seller at the ground floor, Sister Attaa, spoke to Akoma FM after the morning show, further explaining in Akan language Twi that “I’ve been in the market for the last 2 years since it was opened. We have never gotten the opportunity to meet our market leaders for them to address our concerns. Akoma FM has really done well for such a timely programme at the traders door step.”
Most of the passers-by who got attracted also joined the large numbers who were enjoying the dazzling presentation and question lines of host of the show Aduanaba Kofi Asante Ennin.
He assured the listeners of frequent similar programmes to interact and discuss the progress of commercial activities within Kejetia Market and the entire Central Business District.
