The Ghana Prisons Service has launched investigation into videos which showed some inmates who were on parole allegedly smoking substances suspected to be Indian hemp
The highly circulated video, which was premiered exclusively on Akoma FM, had scenes of over five inmates who were taken to the Baba Yara Sports Stadium to work but found a place under a palm tree and smoked their heads off.
The shocking aspect of the video is when after the inmates who are suspected to have come from Kumasi Central Prisons had finished smoking wrapped the remaining in a small plastic, moulded egg-size and inserted into their anus for safe passage to the prison yard. Three out of the five inmates inserted the substances into their anus and walked to join the others under the palm tree.
From the videos, an officer was seen standing a few meters away from the scene but had obviously switched on his ‘see-no-evil; hear-no-evil’ cap.
After showing the over 12-minute video on social media, it attracted backlashes from the general public.
Some taxi drivers even called into the show to confirm the video.
Name withheld, the driver told host of the show Aduanaba Kofi Asante Ennin that “according to the day you claim you shot this secret videos, I picked some inmates together with a prison guard (officer) at Adum, Per their conversation I sensed something fishy so they rerouted me to a certain drinking spot at Amakom where they returned with some stuff sealed in a plastic wrapper so I am sure it’s the same guys but they took the detour to buy their supplies”.
Public Relations Officer for the Ashanti Region Prison Command DSP Richard Bukari, who couldn’t refute the authenticity of the said videos, assured of swift investigations into the matter for appropriate actions to reform the dwindling image of the Ghana Prisons Service.
“Kofi, I will get the said videos and as I am speaking with you, our superiors have heard the issue so I will assure you of immediate actions to bring to bear the real facts of the issues”
