The Kumasi Traditional Council (KTC) has taken a swipe at the Ghana Journalists’ Association (GJA) for going to town instead of seeking clarifications on the circumstances that led to the “advice” to Oyerepa FM’s management to shut down.
The Council descended on the Association for issuing a press release and dared it to rather have gone to court if it had case of press freedom violation.
The Council expressed these sentiments when it summoned the Ashanti Regional Security Council (REGSEC) with the management of Oyerepa FM and the National Peace Council in attendance.
Representatives of these institutions met at Manhyia Palace on Monday, August 29.
The Council denied ever ordering the shutdown of Oyerepa FM, on which banished politician Akwasi Addai Odike is said to have made his damning comments against the Asantehene.
It said what was told the management of the Kumasi-based radio station was not to compel them to act.
But on Friday, August 26, a day after the said advice was given, Oyerepa FM shut down.
According to the head of the Council, Baffour Amankwatia VI, who is also the Bantamahene, what the GJA should have done upon receiving the news was to come before Manhyia to seek clarifications.
He said the action was to sanitise the atmosphere and protect the soul and body of Asanteman.
But GJA President Albert Kwabena Dwumfuor said the statement issued was “fair and balanced”.
