Former President Jerry John Rawlings lived in a rented apartment until his demise two years ago, Dr Donald Senanu Agumenu, Former Special Assistant the late to Former President Rawlings, has said.
In a statement to mark the second memorial anniversary of Mr Rawlings, Mr Agumenu said his selflessness, integrity and penchant for justice was insatiable
“While we cannot debase or underestimate the colossal contributions of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah across the continent and beyond especially in the areas of human dignity and freedom, it’s instructive to note that , attributing materialism to President Rawlings would be synonymous to canonising the devil .
“His selflessness, integrity and penchant for justice was insatiable. Notwithstanding deep seated arguments at some political axis, Prez Rawlings persona remains a symbol of justice , integrity and hope to countless people across the globe- most importantly the underprivileged in society,” the statement said.
It added “After tirelessly working to ameliorate the plight of Ghanaians under untold hardships and restoring the country to a stable democracy and constitutional rule, one may think he would retire at a private presidential villa at the beaches of Keta or at the Ridges Peduase for his love for the environment and the ecosystem, but rather chose to maintain his small country home at Wume waterfront in the Volta Region , a family residence and rented facility(where he lived). A place that was equidistant to his ideal and values.”
Mr Rawlings died on Thursday November 12, 2020.
He was 73 years.
He died at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra after suffering a short illness.
