Travel Content creator solo driving from London to Lagos, Pelumi Nubi, has embarked on a monumental journey to Nigeria, traversing multiple countries and covering over 10,000 miles.
According to her, the decision to undertake this extraordinary feat was not a spontaneous one; it was meticulously planned over almost a year, encompassing careful car modifications, route planning, and extensive preparation.
Nubi, in an interview with Helen Appiah-Ampofo on 3FM Sunrise Morning Show on April 1st, revealed that her journey commenced on January 23rd, 2022, coinciding with her niece’s birthday, marking a significant milestone in her life.
Despite initial skepticism from some quarters about the destination – with one person mistaking Lagos for the city in Portugal – Nubi’s extensive travel experience, having visited over 80 countries, instilled in her the confidence to pursue this ambitious adventure.
“This is just a woman with a really big vision of what people think women can do, especially as a black, solo female traveler,” Nubi expressed, reflecting on the misconceptions and limitations often imposed on female travelers. “I remember announcing the news, and it was very much, ‘You cannot do this,’ and I’m like, ‘Watch out,” she added.
The journey itself has been nothing short of extraordinary, as Nubi traversed through England, France, Spain, Morocco, Mauritania, Senegal, and The Gambia, among other countries, immersing herself in diverse cultures and landscapes along the way.
She chose to stick to the coastal route, opting for a more immersive experience, engaging with locals, savoring local cuisines, and enjoying the essence of each destination.
Reflecting on her experiences, Nubi acknowledged initial concerns about racism, particularly in Mauritania, where slavery was abolished as recently as 2007.
“I think there’s definitely racism, but there is also curiosity,” Nubi remarked.
However, her journey proved to be remarkably positive, emphasizing the importance of being audacious while ensuring necessary safety measures, such as driving with windows up and doors locked at all times.
“Travelling this route, I was quite excited because I was exploring my continent, and I knew there would be an automatic or immediate embrace,” she asserted.
As she continues her odyssey towards Lagos, her journey resonates as a beacon of empowerment and a celebration of the boundless possibilities of travel.
