The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) and its partner, African Center for Economic Transformation (ACET) are holding a nationwide stakeholder consultation to put together the Ghana Compact document to serve as a guide for politicians.
The Ghana compact is going to be a policy document which will be presented to the leadership of political parties for them to understand the thinking of the people.
Chairperson of the NCCE, Kathleen Andy in an interview on the sidelines of the engagement in Takoradi, explained that the idea of the Ghana Compact documentation is to serve as a guide on how our political leaders execute governance.
According to her, Ghana’s biggest weakness is our inability to hold the political leaders accountable. She says it is time for Ghanaians to scrutinize the promises and policies of politicians.
“We are all at fault; delegates want money before they elect a leader, so if an MP wants to go and (for example) find two hundred thousand dollars to come and give it to delegates during primaries and same MP goes and seek for another three thousand dollars for the main elections, what will be the outcome? He has to pay it back. It’s not free, so his ability and energy he will use to work for the nation, will be used to look for money”, she stated.
“… and the day the delegates get money, chop bars and beer bars are all active. When they finish that food, that is the bridge, that is the school and the road, so as citizens we must start thinking along those lines because we also have a role to play” she added.
Meanwhile, a senior fellow for the Africa Center for Economic Transformation, Professor John Asafo Agyei is also urging the citizenry not to base their votes on monetary considerations but rather seek for social contracts with political parties when elected to office.
“They should vote based on carefully examining manifestos of the political parties so that they choose parties that can best implement recommendations they have. So, the voting should be based on policies and not promises, because political parties at times fail to fulfill their promises” he said.
