Residents of bole in the Savannah Region have petitioned the Interior Minister, the Inspector General of Police and the Savannah Regional Security Council to as a matter of urgency take action against recent acts of barbaric killing of residents.
The residents while demonstrating to express their displeasure over the situation, demanded that more police officers be deployed to the bole environs
More than twenty killings have been recorded within the Bole enclave.
In 2022, the bodies of deceased persons were found half buried, with some parts missing.
The recent killings, however, took a different turn as mentally ill people and night security guards, also known as watchmen, became targets.
Four bodies were discovered at different locations in the area between January and June this year.
Bole, once a busy town, has, in recent times, become a ghost town at night.
To register their displeasure over the recent killings, the youth of Bole staged a protest on Saturday, June 8, 2024, demanding an end to the killings.
The Petition of the protestors which was read by Mahama Haruna, the lead convener, to highlight the insecurity in the area.
“We want to draw your attention to the serial killings in the Bole District and to demand swift action from your outfit to restore peace, order, and hope in our community.
“We equally demand a comprehensive account from your men on the 20 murder cases in the Bole District. Thus the progress made so far and the assurance that perpetrators will be brought to justice,” he said.
Mr Mahama Haruna further stressed that the group request for a security beef up in the Bole District in terms of personnel and logistics to ensure effective policing in our town which has sadly become a den of serial killers.
“We demand that the people of Bole be carried along the investigation process where constant updates and statements will be issued as it is done in similar cases.
For some residents like Fauzia, police visibility must be enhanced.
“We are unable to do our businesses at night. I sell noodles at night by the roadside to feed my family. Right now, I cannot do my business again due to the situation we find ourselves in.”
“We are leaving in fear. We have imposed a self-curfew on ourselves and sleep early because we can’t tell who is next,” he lamented.
The Ghana Police Service announced on Friday, June 7, that it has deployed a team of experts to Bole and its environs to support the Regional Police Command.
Bolewura Sarfo Kutuge Feso expressed worry over the killings but assured his support for security agencies.
“The surge in unnatural deaths in the traditional area is giving me sleepless nights. What I can say is I’m in constant touch with the security agencies in bole and I am committed to giving them the needed support both physically and financially to unravel the mysteries behind these killings. This I assure you,” he stated.
Protest
Residents of Bole in the Savannah region on Saturday June 8, 2024 took to the streets to protest what they described as rising insecurity in the town.
The protest, led by a group known as the Concern citizens of Bole was to register their displeasure over the unexplained killings of some 20 people over the last three years in the town.
The move follows recent news of the killing of some three people in Bole in a space of one month.
