As the 2024 general elections draw near, the Ledzokuku Constituency is buzzing with political activity.
Supporters of both the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) are making their voices heard, passionately discussing the performances of their respective parliamentary candidates.
Ledzokuku is a diverse constituency, often considered a microcosm of Ghana’s broader socio-economic landscape. Known for its active civic engagement and political shifts, it is frequently described as a swing constituency. As the election approaches, residents are preparing for another intense battle for their votes.
The NPP’s Comeback Kid
Historically, Ledzokuku has not kept one Member of Parliament (MP) for more than a term. Dr. Bernard Oko Boye, representing the NPP, is making a return to contest for the second time after being voted out in 2020.
His supporters are seizing this opportunity to rally support and criticize their opponents in hopes of swaying voters.
“Dr. Oko Boye has demonstrated exceptional leadership and dedication to our constituency during his previous term,” said a fervent supporter at a recent rally. “We believe he is the right candidate to bring about the change we need.”
In 2020, Dr. Oko Boye lost to the NDC’s Benjamin Ayiku Narteh by a narrow margin of about 1,800 votes. This year, he aims to reclaim his seat, emphasizing his previous contributions to the community and outlining his vision for the future.
The NDC’s Incumbent Advantage
On the other side, Benjamin Ayiku Narteh of the NDC is the incumbent MP seeking re-election. His supporters are confident, highlighting his achievements, particularly in health and education. They believe that Ayiku Narteh is the candidate to break the constituency’s one-term jinx.
“Under Ayiku Narteh’s leadership, we have seen significant improvements in our local healthcare and educational facilities,” a supporter noted. “He has proven himself capable and committed to our community’s development.”
Ayiku Narteh’s campaign is focused on continuity and building on his accomplishments over the past term. His supporters are vocal about his contributions and are determined to ensure he retains his position.
Key Issues for Voters
Ledzokuku is home to predominantly Ga ethnic groups and has a significant youth population, which brings both vibrancy and urgency to the need for sustainable development. As election day approaches, key issues such as roads, unemployment, education, infrastructure, and health are at the forefront of voters’ minds.
Residents will be evaluating the tangible benefits they have experienced and the promises fulfilled by their candidates. The choice on December 7 will come down to whether they believe in the return of Dr. Oko Boye or a second term for Benjamin Ayiku Narteh.
A Constituency to Watch
The parliamentary elections in the Ledzokuku constituency promise to be one of the most closely watched races in the 2024 elections. The outcome will be a significant indicator of the political mood in this critical swing constituency.
