Players and technical staff of FC Nordsjaelland have been full of praise for assistant coach Michael Essien, indicating his mentorship and character as crucial for the next generation.
The former Black Stars player was considered as one of the best midfielders in his playing days, and featured for clubs like Olympique Lyon, Chelsea, Milan and Real Madrid, while making 59 appearances for Ghana on international duty.
He then ventured into coaching after his retirement from the game, and at Nordsjælland, his contribution to improving young players has not gone unnoticed.
Speaking in an interview by Right to Dream, some of Essien’s colleagues and trainees lauded his impact and character in the game, labeling it as crucial for their progress and performance.
“He is very respectful to everyone he meets, and has a natural calmness in almost every situation. He is always positive and one of the most down to earth guys I have ever met. He wants the best for all of the players and staff around him. He is here for us and we can feel it”, they said.
Nordsjælland head coach Johannes Hoff Throup also expressed his satisfaction with having Essien as an assistant. Indicating his contribution to player development as second to none.
“We talk about Mike as a role model, I think it is important to have in mind his career as a footballer. As coaches, sometimes we talk about tactics but the advice the players can get from him is just different. Johannes Hoff Throup,” he added.
At 41, Essien’s leadership from the touchline for top European clubs looks inevitable. However, he is taking it one step at a time for now, as he looks determined to develop his abilities and gain experience at Nordsjælland.
