The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has stated that it expected a direct response from the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) to the statements made by the aspiring parliamentary candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Amenfi East, Ernest Frimpong, which incited illegal miners to attack security officers who prevent them from operating.
In a video that went viral, Mr Frimpong is seen at a meeting with the miners, in the presence of the Regional Minister. He is heard among others, telling the miners to beat whoever accosts them.
The GAF subsequently issued a statement urging members of the public to desist from attacking soldiers as that would amount to a grave offence.

However, the NDC believes that GAF’s response was too general. Especially so, when not too long after Mr Frimpong’s video went viral, a military officer was attacked.
“Unless the GAF, once the most disciplined and revered institution in Ghana, has become compromised along political lines, one wonders why Brigadier General E. Aggrey-Quashie (Director General, Public Relations) would conceal the detail of calling out the person(s) in the viral video and warning them directly instead of …. cautioning the general public,” the NDC stated in a press release signed by Elikem Kotoko, Deputy National Organiser.
Galamsey comment: GAF press statement is disgusting – Toobu on their response to NPP PC
The NDC cautioned that the GAF risk losing respect if such incidents continue unchecked.
The party emphasised the need to address the comments with the source in focus to avoid tragedies such as befell the late Major Mahama.
“In the past eight (8) years we have lost too many of your men to civilian actions and not at war fronts, this is disturbing. Mention can be made of…(1) Major Mahama in Upper Denkyira (II) Private more Sherrif in Ashairnan (iii) Lance Corporal Michael Danso in Kasoa” the NDC cited.
