Golf has seen tremendous growth in the country in recent times – and it can only get better.
With several corporate institutions supporting many tournaments and golf academies being opened to teach the younger generation how to play the game ethically, the future can easily be said to be very bright.
Last Saturday, the Asantehene,Otumfour Osei Tutu II, a huge golf enthusiast, teed off to open the 82nd Airtel Ghana Golf Open at the Royal Golf Club in Kumasi. Also teeing off to commemorate the prestigious annual tournament was the Managing Director of Airtel Ghana, Lucy Quist.
About 150 top-flight amateur golfers took part in the 54-hole event over three days.
This year's competition was open to Ghanaian-based golfers with handicap 24 and below.Airtel Ghana is sponsoring the event for the next three years. There were representations from all the major golf clubs, with notable names on the golf terrain taking part.
The Asantehene wished participants well and commended Airtel for coming on board to help grow the sport. He later on the opening day hosted participants to dinner at the Manhyia Palace.
Lucy Quist said Airtel's involvement with the Ghana Open is for the long haul, adding that "we find the game of golf as one of the strategic sports whose benefits go beyond just winning a trophy". She said Airtel has an initial three-year partnership agreement with the Ghana Golf Association and was happy to be part of "Ghana's premier golf event".
President of the Ghana Golf Association Dr. Felix Frempong was happy with the interest shown in the competition by sponsors and players alike and was optimistic that the greens at the Royal Golf Club would make for an interesting competition
Also included in this year’s event was a golf skills clinic, conducted as part of the programme to introduce the sport to aspiring golfers.
