The Ghana Grid Company Ltd. (GRIDCo) has recorded a full year without a single major safety incident, an achievement the company attributes to staff vigilance, discipline and strict adherence to safety protocols.
Speaking at the company’s annual Corporate Safety and Awards Durbar in Kumasi, Director of Technical Services, Ing. Vincent Boachie, emphasised that the zero-incident milestone was the result of continuous collaborative effort across departments.
“Over the past year, the Technical Services Division has worked closely with many of you and with our partners and stakeholders to strengthen our safety systems. We recorded no major safety incident this year because of your vigilance, discipline and adherence to safety wear practices,” he stated.
He noted that GRIDCo has made significant progress toward aligning its safety culture with international standards. The company is currently transitioning toward full compliance with ISO 45001, the global benchmark for occupational health and safety management.
As part of this effort, the organisation completed a comprehensive review of the Standard Protection Code to reflect evolving business needs and drive continuous improvement. GRIDCo also developed finesse standards and guidelines for safety signage across its installations to ensure uniformity, clarity and compliance at all sites.
Ing. Boachie further commended staff for their dedication to maintaining a strong safety culture across all operational areas.
He praised employees for their active participation in this year’s safety activities, which included a blood donation exercise, a health walk, ergonomic education sessions and an inter-departmental safety quiz.
According to him, these activities served as important reminders of the need to prioritise personal well-being, cultivate healthy habits and look out for one another.
“Every year, this celebration gives us a moment to pause, come together as a family and remind ourselves why safety matters so much to the work that we do. Thank you for showing up and demonstrating genuine commitment to safety,” he said.
With fire safety remaining another key priority during the year, Ing. Boachie revealed that GRIDCo has invested in upgrading fire protection systems across all its facilities, including servicing, installing and replacing critical firefighting equipment. Additionally, staff, contractors and private security personnel also received practical, hands-on training in electrical safety, firefighting, CPR and first aid to enhance their response capabilities during emergencies.
Deputy Chief Executive in charge of Engineering & Operations, Frank Asirifi Otchere, for his part, underscored the importance of this year’s theme: ‘Revolutionarising Corporate Occupational Safety and Health: The Role of Technology and Innovation’.
He cautioned staff against becoming desensitised to the risks in their working environment. “Very often when you work in an environment for a long time, you begin to take its elements for granted. We often forget that the main commodity we work with—electricity—is essential for development, but also a very dangerous commodity that can kill us easily. That is why safety awareness in our workplace is critical,” he stressed.
Mr. Otchere reminded staff that existing safety protocols are not bureaucratic obstacles but essential safeguards developed through years of experience.
He urged staff to embrace innovation and technology in advancing workplace safety and emphasised the need for consistent use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and adherence to all safety requirements.
Special mention and award were made to AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine for their swift assistance to GRIDCo when fire gutted one of its main transformers at Obuasi, helping to restore power back to Obuasi and its surrounding communities.
Staff and operational areas across the country were awarded for their various feats in the year under review.
