The Technical Advisor for Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development, Eric Oduro is suggesting an introduction of a 24-hour work duration in Public Sector to improve productivity in the sector and reduce unemployment.
The government of Ghana will before the end of the year, 2018 launch a 2018-2023 National Public Sector Reform Strategy.
The new strategy would among other things build the capacity of people who deliver the public service and restructure the processes to ensure responsiveness, efficiency and effectiveness in service delivery at all levels of governance.
At a workshop in Ho, organized by the office of the Senior Minister to sensitize workers on the National Public Sector Reform Strategy, the local governance expert called for the employment of more people in public sector.
In an interview with Citi News, Mr Oduro argued that the policy if adopted would improve efficiency in service delivery and engage more job seekers in utilizing the night and morning.
“We look at the unemployment rate in this country if gov’t is to allow the public sector institutions to also work day and night, 24/7 you will agree with me that gov’t is not going to employ the same number of people they are employing now. What I am calling for is a reform in the public sector in service delivery process in such a way that I want to see a public service that works 24/7, so we will have a group of people who will work from 8 to 5 they will close another batch will come in and continue the work.”
He also suggested an introduction of “input and output analysis” to monitor workers which he said when done diligently would grow the country’s GDP and better position the government to pay workers’ salaries.
The government has for the past years been considering various solutions to the unemployment situation in the country which has reached an alarming rate.
The Deputy Volta Regional Minister, Maxwell Blagogie who delivered a speech on behalf of the Minister, pledged to support the private sector to meet the government’s target of dealing with unemployment issues.
The workshop was attended by key officials from the various Districts and Municipalities in Volta and Eastern region.
