The Asokore Mampong Municipal Assembly in the Ashanti region has rejected the position it was given in the 2019 District League Table.
According to the assembly, it has made significant efforts in education, health, water, sanitation, security and good governance in the past year and as a result, does not deserve the zero percent it obtained in the rankings.
The ranking which was released on Tuesday highlighted a worrying trend of the seeming widened gap that exists between the districts that were performing well and others performing poorly.
The Asante Akyem North Municipality came first with a 100% score as against the 0% score by Asokore Mampong.Speaking to journalists at a press conference on Wednesday, the Municipal Chief Executive, Alhaji Alidu Seidu said his outfit believes the ranking does not reflect the reality on the ground.
“Asokore Mampong was ranked last in the country. We seek to know the basis and criteria for which they came up to draw the table. They scored us zero percent which in essence means we didn’t even obtain one mark. We the members of the Asokore Mampong Assembly are vehemently rejecting the position of our ranking on the District League Table as the last of all the 216 Districts. We are rejecting it to the effect that there was a laid down formula they came by – which is education, sanitation among others. But we have done a number of projects which are at various stages of completion including various toilet facilities.”
The table published annually by UNICEF in partnership with the Centre for Democratic Development is aimed at highlighting disparities in social development among districts.
This year’s edition ranked all 216 districts in relation to key indicators such as education, health, water, sanitation and child protection based on existing data on the then ten regions of Ghana.
Highlights of report
A major highlight of the findings was the regional analysis of the status of open defecation in the districts.
On this level, the Nandom and Tatale Sanguli districts were ranked as the best performing assemblies while Agona East and Techiman Municipality are the poor performing districts.
The three best-performing regions are the Upper East, Upper West and the Northern Region.
Surprisingly all other regions had less than 5% of communities noted as open defecation free.
For the Ashanti and Northern Regions, the open defecation free initiative is yet to be rolled out.
On the national average, Greater Accra was ranked the best performing region with the Northern and Eastern regions ranked the lowest.
The report further highlighted that, majority of the districts performed poorly in more than one indicator a situation which has resulted in the researchers questioning the basis of resource allocation in Ghana.
