President Nana Akufo-Addo has extended his condolences to France following the death of its former President Jacques Chirac.
The President described him as “a friend of Africa and of our country, Ghana.”
“Bilateral relations between Ghana and France were considerably strengthened during his tenure of office as President, and have remained strong ever since,” the President recalled in a statement.
Chirac, who died on September 26, is also remembered for his opposition to the US-led invasion of Iraq in 2003 and his advocacy of the European Union.
He served as head of state from 1995 to 2007.
This made him France’s second longest-serving post-war president after his immediate predecessor Francois Mitterrand.
Find below President Akufo-Addo’s full statement:
On behalf of the Government and people of Ghana, I extend sincere condolences to the President of the French Republic, His Excellency Emmanuel Macron, and to the Government and people of France, on the death of former French President, His Excellency Jacques Chirac. Our sympathies go also to his wife, children and family.
Rightly described as “a giant of French politics”, Jacques Chirac was a friend of Africa and of our country, Ghana. Bilateral relations between Ghana and France were considerably strengthened during his tenure of office as President, and have remained strong ever since.
Indeed, it was at the 11th Francophonie Summit in Bucharest, Romania, in September 2006, presided over by President Chirac, to which I led the Ghana delegation as Foreign Minister, that Ghana became an Associate Member of La Francophonie, without first having to be made an Observer Member. Ghana, an anglophone nation, became one of a handful of countries that enjoy membership of both the Commonwealth and La Francophonie.
May God bless him, and may his soul rest in perfect peace.
