The Joint Parliamentary Committee on Local Government, Environment, Science, Technology, Works and Housing are demanding as a matter of urgency, the siting of waste treatment plants in Kumasi, Takoradi and Tamale.
The demand, they say is informed by what members witnessed at the waste disposal sites in these regional capitals during their recent tour of the regions.
Relating to how a similar plant sited in Accra has dealt considerably with the sanitation challenge, Ranking Member for the Local Government Committee, Nii Lante Vanderpuye bewailed the current state of sanitation across the country.
“Kumasi should have a new and modern liquid and solid waste treatment plant. We believe that we could have what we have in my constituency, that is the Accra Sewage System in all the regional capitals because it has helped a lot in Accra with sanitation and in fact, with all the bad odour we have from the Lavender Hill. I think my other colleagues in other places where these things are sited deserve that,” he said.
The ranking member also called for the demolition of old waste sites and new waste sites, built.
“All the inappropriate liquid waste sites should be decommissioned and new ones built, within the shortest possible time. We need to impress upon the Common Fund administrator to at least make an amount of money available so that it becomes a government policy that from now until the next ten years we are building one liquid waste and solid waste recycling or treatment plant in one region every year,” he added.
Waste management has become one of the biggest challenges confronting developing countries.
Increased population growth and rapid urbanisation have resulted in increased generation of volumes of waste in our cities.
Ghana is one of the countries facing a serious problem in managing tones of both solid and liquid waste generated daily.
It is estimated that 12,710 tons of municipal solid waste are generated per day in Ghana while 26,000 cubic meters of liquid waste generated daily in the National Capital alone.
