The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Mrs. Mary Chinery-Hesse believes the new Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo has an uncompromising mandate to ensure cohesion in the running of the academic institution.
Mrs. Chinery-Hesse says the dawning of Prof. Appiah Amfo’s era should mean an end to cases of sharp division among members of the university management architecture; a situation she admitted is making the university lag behind in global education advancement.
Speaking in her welcome address during the investiture of Prof. Appiah Amfo as the 13th Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Mrs. Chinery-Hesse asked the newly inducted VC to leverage her rich university administration experience to mend factions within the university community as quickly as possible.
A congenial academic environment she believes, if created, will ensure a smooth realization of the university’s aims and objectives.
“You are not taking over as a novice. We all expect your leadership to see the university through the strategies approved for decentralization. I am sure you have the capacity to tackle any negative issue that might come up in relation to governance, teaching, and research in this regard. Please promise me to carry everyone along, [and ensure] transparency such that unnecessary polarization will be a thing of the past at this institution. As Vice-Chancellor, you have the responsibility to make the university achieve its mission and vision.”
The Chancellor further encouraged that, other forms of challenges including the worsening faculty to student ratio, use of ICT among others should be priority areas for the Vice-Chancellor.
“Like all human institutions, the University of Ghana has its fair share of challenges that need to be addressed with some form of urgency. It is my expectation that increasing the use of ICT will help reduce the many teaching challenges. It behoves on us all to do our very best to ensure that this university attains an enviable and unassailable niche in the tertiary education space, even globally”, she admonished.
On her part, Prof. Appiah Amfo was grateful for the honour done to her.
She particularly thanked God and the University Council for seeing to her successful appointment and pledged her commitment to work towards the realization of the university’s mission and vision.
“I am awed by this honour done me by my appointment as the 13th VC of the University of Ghana and the first female to be so appointed. My heart is full of gratitude to God for bringing me this far in life. I am thankful to the Council of the University of Ghana for the demonstration of confidence and trust in me by endorsing the recommendation by the search committee. It’s been a long and seditious process, but in the midst of this faith refining experience, the overwhelming experience and support from countless people have brought me this far.”
The appointment of Prof. Appiah Amfo took effect from Tuesday, October 26, 2021.
She becomes the first woman to occupy the position in the history of the nation’s premier university, joining the likes of Professor Mrs. Rita Akosua Dickson and Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang as the first women to occupy the prestigious position of Vice-Chancellor at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), and the University of Cape Coast (UCC) respectively.
Prof. Amfo, aged 50, a professor of Linguistics and former Pro-Vice-Chancellor in charge of Students and Academic Affairs, has been acting in such a position since August 1, 2021.
