Former Speaker of Parliament, Prof. Aaron Michael Oquaye, has denied endorsing Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia as presidential candidate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
According to Prof. Oquaye who Speaker of the Seventh Parliament of the Fourth Republic of Ghana, a report on pages 1 and 11 of the Daily Dispatch issue of Wednesday, May 19, 2021, claiming that he had endorsed Dr Bawumia is false.
“I wish to state emphatically that I have not endorsed anyone as the 2024 flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party,” Prof Oquaye said in a rejoinder dated Thursday, May 19, 2021.
According to the rejoinder, on Monday, May 17, 2021, Prof Oquaye granted an interview to Okyeman TV’s Raymond Kumah.
“The interview was not about flagbearer at all”, the rejoinder exposed.
The rejoinder added that the interview centered on the NPP and what it stands for from ancient to modern, including Ghana’s Digitalization Progress.
“It must be emphasized that no comparison was made with any of those interested in flagbearership. It featured President Kufuor on specific areas. No endorsement was suggested and I did not endorse anyone,” it added.
He believes citing Dr Bawumia, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, Dr Owusu Afriyie Akoto and Alan Kyeremanten as some members of the NPP doing well in government should not be seen as an endorsement for any candidate.
