Kenneth Gilbert Adjei addressing the media
Residents of Sekondi-Takoradi have been assured of more reliable water supply after the expansion of the Daboase Water Treatment Plant in the Western Region has been completed by May 2026.
The Minister for Works, Housing, and Water Resources, Kenneth Gilbert Adjei, gave the assurance after inspecting the project site.
The Daboase Water Treatment Plant relies on raw water from the Pra River for processing into drinking water.
However, years of illegal mining-related pollution and deterioration of the old facility have increased treatment costs as well as reduced efficiency.
The expansion, incorporating new technology, is designed to address the challenges and restore reliability.
The minister was accompanied by the Managing Director of Ghana Water Company Limited, Adam Mutawakilu.
Mr. Adjei expressed optimism that the Daboase treatment plant construction is progressing steadily despite minor challenges.
“The project is not behind schedule. There are few challenges that the government is working to deal with, and the project can be finished by May 2026,” he noted.
The minister indicated that the completion of the expansion project would provide much-needed relief to residents who have long endured persistent water supply difficulties.
“The residents can be assured that very soon their taps will flow,” the minister stressed.
Project Manager of Strabag, Vlad Falup, overseeing the project, explained that a new chamber has been introduced at the facility to remove sediments from polluted raw water without the use of chemicals.
“This will significantly reduce the overall chemical load in the treatment process,” he pointed out.
The expansion project started in 2024, and once completed, the plant is expected to boost production by an additional 22 million gallons per day.
It will ensure a more consistent water supply to Sekondi-Takoradi and surrounding communities.
