A bill seeking to establish a Sports Development Fund has been laid before Parliament to provide sustainable financing for the growth of sporting disciplines across the country.
The proposed legislation, tabled on Thursday, December 11, 2025, has been referred to the Parliamentary Committee on Youth and Sports for consideration and subsequent report to the House.
Presenting the bill, Mr Kofi Iddi Adams, the Minister of Youth and Recreation, explained that the initiative was designed to broaden support for sports beyond football.
He emphasised that while football remained popular, the fund is intended to ensure that other disciplines receive the resources needed to thrive.
“This fund is not for football alone. It is to help various sporting disciplines grow and achieve their potential,” Mr Adams stated on the floor of Parliament.
The Sports Development Fund, when operational, is expected to provide financial backing for infrastructure, training, and talent development in athletics, boxing, basketball, hockey, and other disciplines.
Parliament is expected to debate the Committee’s report in the coming weeks before the bill is passed into law.
