Birim Central MCE presents grants to PWDs
Akyem Oda April 8 GNA- Ms Ophelia Koomson, Birim Central Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), on Tuesday presented a grant of GH 7,500.00 to Persons with Disability (PWDs) at Akyem Oda. The grant, which was from the Municipal Assemblys share of the District Assemblies Common Fund, aimed among other things to minimise poverty among the PWDs particularly, those outside the formal sector of employment. It will also provide educational support for children, students and trainees with disabilities and building the capacity of PWDs to enable them advocate and assert their rights. Ms Koomson, said since 2010 the assembly had disbursed more than GH 164,790.35 for disability issues. In addition to these, 352 PWDs have been given grant for various activities, she said. Ms Koomson said the support had assisted a number of PWDs to enter, stay and complete their education. It has also assisted others who hitherto urgently needed assistive devices such as clutches, wheel chairs, braces, hearing aids and other devices to aid their normal living but could not do so as a result of lack of funds. She said through the decentralised Social Welfare and Community Development Department, the assembly had supported the vulnerable and the disadvantaged to have access to quality health care by enrolling them onto the National Health Insurance Scheme. Ms Koomson indicated that the assembly was not only disbursing the funds to the PWDs but also monitoring the utilisation through a Fund Management Committee. This committee is carrying out quarterly monitoring visits to the beneficiaries to ensure that grants disbursed to them are being utilise for the purposes, she stressed. The MCE urged the beneficiaries to invest the funds well so that it would eventually be beneficial to them and their dependants including their families, and the nation as whole. She appealed to public-spirited individuals and organisations to complement the efforts of the government in making life more meaningful to PWDs in the society. GNA
