AMA demolishes building at Kisseman
Accra, April 8, GNA A Special Task Force of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) and the police has demolished a house at Kisseman at Achimota because it was unsafe and dangerous to the public. Mr Victor Mensah, Director of Metro Works Department of the AMA who led the taskforce, told the GNA that the Accra Metropolitan Chief Executive, Dr Alfred Oko Vanderpuije, and heads of department went on a routine inspection in Accra and cited the building to be unsafe and ordered that its development should cease. He said it was found out that the owner of the three-storey building, one Mavis Akua Serwaa, had no building permit, no land title documents and no building plan. Mr Mensah said one Mr Eric Boadu who later claimed to be a brother of the owner of the building was invited by the Accra Planning Committee because the contractor could not be traced to produce documents on the structure and to explain other issues. He said Mr Boadu honoured the invitation but he could not give any tangible explanation as to why the three-storey building was being constructed with such visible defects of beams being supported with wooden poles and columns not properly aligned. Mr Mensah said the demolishing revealed the unsuitability of materials used by the contractor. He said Mr Boadu has been given up April 8 to collect all the debris from the site and would be surcharged for all costs incurred by the AMA in the demolishing exercise as provided by the National Building Regulation, L.I. 1630 and the Accra Building Regulation which empowers the Assembly to take action it deems fit on building without permit.GNA
